I overheard two men talking at a local coffee shop last week. They were in their late 60s & they were swapping stories back and forth.

One man was a bit louder and more rotund in the mid-section. He recounted his many failures and successes as a business owner. His parents were from Italy, and they owned a pizza shop in Brooklyn. The pizza shop served not only as a stop for good food, but a stop for people in hard times. They fed runaways, transient people, the drug addicted, the down and outers & anyone else who needed a slice.

His friend was quite intrigued by his stories. “I always wish I took more risks in life like you,” he continued, before taking a sip of his coffee, “you’ve been all over and met so many different people. You’re fearless.”

The heavier set man paused for a moment. He rested his hands on his belly, then tapped his fingers across his midsection. “I had to take risks. This is who I am. I had no other choice.”

To me, that man’s response embodied someone who lived a creative life. Despite the lows, he never shied away from being himself. He was authentic & followed his inner voice.

Let’s talk setting! How do you decide where to set your story? #setting #fictionbooks #fiction

1. Perfect conditions don’t exist: Rain, snow, wind, sun, good moods, bad moods...all of these are simply circumstances. When you learn to embrace the circumstances, the conditions become an afterthought, and they will never stop you from moving forward.

2. Look Up: Staring down at your feet will prevent you from seeing how far you’ve come. Even if the finish line isn’t in sight, the world around you is far more exciting than your sneakers.

3. Consistency matters: You can make it good later.

3. Give Yourself Permission to Suck: Perfect doesn’t exist. Consistent effort, pivoting strategy, editing, proofreading, learning, trying, building & failing all lead to success.

4. Don’t shy away from hills: I’m SO guilty of this. Somedays, it’s easier to shy away from the more challenging course & stay on the flat trails. Yet the hills will make you stronger. Move out of your comfort zone.

BOOK EXCERPT: I was reminded of one of my character’s “safe places” when I saw these photos.

A small flame burned at the end of Saanvi’s cigarette. The smoke left her mouth, and floated towards the CITGO sign above Fenway.

The crickets were loud, playing the overture for the upcoming season. A gust of wind unsteadied Saanvi, disrupting the peace she sought from her back porch. Her silk bathrobe could not contend with the cool air, and she used her palm to rub her arms warm.

Saanvi’s personal oasis had an oversized Ficus tree, a near full ashtray, and a small Adirondack chair. Some of Saanvi’s worst moments were made better by that porch. After her mother died, Saanvi practically lived outside. “If smoke can dissolve into the sky,” she thought, “then maybe she isn’t too far gone.” That trail of thought led her nowhere in the case of Pip though.

For me, writing prompts are like stretching for the mind. I need to warm-up, before I take on the distances. Here are some of my favorite and most used below. Would love to learn what yours are!

1. Write a story with a focus on time (i.e. a ticking time bomb, a countdown, time-travel, etc...).
2. You see a wedding cake splattered across the freeway, write a story.
3. What advice can a child give an adult?

I’m a firm believer that you have to celebrate the “wins” in writing. Novels are not written in a day. Most novels aren’t written in a year. I see every draft as a win, which is why I LOVE rereading my drafts. The evolution of a novel is an exciting ride, filled with highs, lows and a lot of “oh my, did I write this?” moments 😂.
